Island of Crete
CHANIA
Chania is one of the 4 counties in Crete and one of the most beautiful also.It is only one hour driving from Rethymnon and 2 hours driving from Heraklion. The prefecture of Chania covers all the west part of the island starting a few kilometers before Georgiopouli(in the north) and Frangokastello(in the south) and ending with the beautiful beaches of Elafonisi or Gramvoussa. You can reach it easy by boat or by plane as there is an airport in Souda a few kilometers out from Chania city. From the airport there are many possibilities to reach your destination:by special transfer buses,by taxi or by your own way renting a car.The specific of this city is the Venetian style and culture having as second and symbolic name "Chania-the small Venice".
In Chania county you can have all the activities you like and wait from Crete: climbing the Lefka Ori mountains, visiting the beautiful churches and monasteries or just enjoying the sandy beaches.
Where to go? What to visit?
The most famous places to go and visit in Chania county are as I already mentioned some the old city of Chania with the Venetian Harbour, the port and its narrow streets in Venetian style, the Naval Museum,The Archaeological Museum and Byzantine Museum and not in the last the market place with the traditional souvenirs and plenty of shops.
Not to forget to mention you can visit(this is for the climbers and mountaineers only) the Samaria gorge which is the longest gorge in Europe. It is an exhausting day but that you will never forget. For relaxing days I strongly recommend the beaches like:Elafonisi,Paleochora,Falassarna or Gramvoussa with the pure water for swimming or a nice day with the boat from Chora Sfakion to Paleochora stoping in Sougia and Agia Roumeli.Last but not least try to make an idea about the life in the small villages and the traditions that you will not meet anywhere else except here and you will not regret.
