Island of Crete
Rethymno
Rethymno is one of the 4 counties(prefecture) in Crete and it is situated as all the biggest on the north coast. It has a very good situation between Heraklion and Chania, 79km far from the first one and 59km far from the second one.The prefecture of Rethymno starts a few kilometers after Fodele in the north and ends before Georgiopouli and in the south part starts with Agia Galini and ends before Frangokastello. It is very easy to be reached by boat from Athens and if you choose to come by plane it is only 1 hour far from Heraklion or Chania airports. It is built in similar style with Chania with a lot of fortress and museums which means that has a big history but also has sandy beaches and virgin places for those who love nature, visiting the caves and the gorges in the mountains.
Where to go? What to visit?
The most famous places to visit in Rethymno county are like Fortezza, The History and folklore museum, The Venetian Loggia and The Rimondi Fountain which remained from the time that Crete was occupied by the Venetians. Finishing with the hystorical and symbolic places of the town you can visit the market(laiki) for traditional souvenirs and not last the small streets with the shops and after a long walk having a nice coffee in the nice cafes, but also enjoying a meal in the small and simple tavernas a long the beach.
At last I left the prefecture of Rethymno out from the town where you can enjoy and see pure Cretan life in very pictoresque villages like: Episkopi, Spili and Anogia, and more touristic ones like:Plakias, Schinaria, Preveli beach, Agia Galini and Agios Pavlos. You can visit Agia Irini Monastery where you can find your peace and having a traditional sweet and a glass of water offered by the nuns and also you can spend sometime visiting the only natural lake on the island Lake Kournas like swimming, eating or only spending some time on the beach.Like every place in Crete this area offers everything you want and for all the ages from children to adults and retire age(never old).
